He's putting out some of the most interesting food in Portland now, which was not his original goal when moving here from Oklahoma to take part in Portland's music scene. Alan Weiner joins us to tell us about his journey from a boy in Iowa to a long-time contracted NY Times photographer based in Atlanta, to Portland, where he has established himself as a premiere freelance food photographer. Alan shares with us some of the most incredible assignments he had for the NY Times, from political unrest in the USA and Russia to the '96 Olympics and political conventions and even hurricane disasters. #123 Carlo Lamagna and Nick Zukin - Cultural Appropriation

On the heels of the controversy set forth upon the closing of Kooks Burritos,
a "shit list" was published that listed over 60 Portland restaurants owned by white people, along with suggestions of People of Color-owned businesses that should be frequented instead.

Nick Zukin's Mi Mero Mole appeared on the list of businesses that people should avoid.

Carlo Lamagna, an American-born Filipino, who is Executive Chef at Clyde Common and the future Magna, recently opened and subsequently closed a taco restaurant with a white partner.

We asked them to join us to for a discussion of the list and cultural appropriation in general.

#122 Mike Thelin - Feast Portland

Mike Thelin onsiders himself a champion of chefs and the bounty of Oregon.  His storied career has taken him from Scappoose, OR to New York and other continents, and now back home to Oregon, where he's in his sixth year co-producing Feast Portland.  While Mike has been a huge factor in helping promote Portland as a premiere food city, we wanted to hear more about Mike than we usually do, and we did.  We also got a taste of what's to come at Feast in September (tix on sale early June at feastportland.com), and a little talk of the first year of Hot Luck, the food and music festival that kicked off just before this podcast begins streaming.  Also, some of what has been learned about Pine Street Market.

Freelance Writer Chad Walsh joins Chris for a protein binge crawl: Six beef tartares in one night, which would not have been possible without two enthusiastic crashers, Natalia Toral and Tami Wood. While the criteria started out as steak tartares as menu staples only, Chris and Chad come to the conclusion that great tartare doesn't have to be beef.

Erika joins us to talk about her experiences from childhood to farm to table as she embarks on year 14 of Plate & Pitchfork.  Oh, and there's that little thing about selling sex ads in Willy Week.
